Wisconsin's
Ancient Wonder

One of North America's most significant archaeological sites โ€” a Mississippian culture settlement flourishing here for over 400 years, now preserved for future generations.

A Place Where Ancient
History Lives

Aztalan State Park preserves one of Wisconsin's most remarkable archaeological treasures โ€” a Mississippian culture site occupied roughly 900โ€“1300 CE, with connections stretching from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast.

The Mounds

Three major platform mounds dominate the landscape โ€” earthen monuments built by hand over centuries. These structures served as ceremonial platforms, elite residences, and symbols of political power in the Mississippian world.

The Stockade

A reconstructed wooden palisade wall with bastions encircles much of the ancient settlement. Built in 1968 using original post holes, it evokes the defensive architecture that once protected this thriving community on the banks of the Crawfish River.
